The Status of Greyhound Racing in the United States

The decline of greyhound racing has continued unabated in 1996. Seven tracks for live racing have folded since January 1995. Of the two new greyhound tracks which opened since 1995, both have declared bankruptcy and one has closed (respectively, Shoreline Star in Connecticut and Camptown in Kansas). Live greyhound racing was recently banned in Nevada. However, Greenetrack Greyhound Park in Alabama reopened in 1998 as a seasonal track.

For the years 1994 and 1995, total industry revenues (excluding payouts/winnings) from live dog racing have dropped an astounding 30%.

49 tracks are now open for live dog racing in 15 of the 16 states where LIVE greyhound racing is currently LEGAL.
