RACING INDUSTRY INSIDER SEEKS STATE SENATE SEAT

Jan 06, 2006 - The Greyhound Protection League Unmasks Attempts by the Greyhound Racing Industry to Control West Virginia Legislature

Penn Valley, California – The Greyhound Protection League (GPL) announced today that it wants to set the record straight about announced West Virginia State Senate candidate Mike Green before the January 9th filing date. GPL director, Susan Netboy, says that Mike Green is a West Virginia based greyhound breeder whose personal wealth was largely accumulated from his involvement in the gambling business.

Green publicly states that his primary business is a property development company, Green Line Development, Inc. A company that he registered with the Secretary of State’s office on May 9, 2005, a month after he filed pre-candidacy papers to run for the senate. But Netboy says that’s not the only source of income for Mr. Green. The Michael Green she knows of is a greyhound breeder, a lobbyist for the state’s greyhound racing industry and a kennel operator at three dog tracks: Tri-State Racing and Gaming Center, Wheeling Island Racing and Gaming Center and Wisconsin’s Dairyland Greyhound Park.

“There appears to be an unwillingness on Mr. Green’s part to divulge his strong ties to gambling,” said Netboy, speculating that the unsavory reputation of both gaming and dog racing provide motive for suppression of the information.

“Being in the business of exploiting people and animals is not a particularly positive platform to run on,” said Netboy. “Nonetheless, it’s time for Green to come clean.”

GPL uncovered state documents indicating that Green has received nearly $300,000 in payouts from the state run West Virginia Greyhound Breeder Development Fund, a program that GPL accuses of contributing to a nation-wide over breeding problem in racing greyhounds. “Green is a perfect example of someone who took advantage of the fund in order to amass a fortune off the backs of innocent greyhounds,” said Netboy.

The Greyhound Protection League is a national, non-profit greyhound advocacy organ-ization that recently ran television ads in West Virginia exposing the plight of the racing greyhound. For more information visit: grehounds.org
